With Billie Holiday's voice in her prime and these groups loaded with talent (i.e., Wardell Gray, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Charles Mingus, Art Tatum, Tiny Grimes, Ben Webster, et al.), the 24 tracks can't go wrong musically. But it's a mishmash of different bands backing Lady Day, from the Eddie Heywood Trio to the Noble Sissle, Duke Ellington, and Bob Haggart big bands, Hot Lips Page, and the JATP All-Stars. Unfortunately, the sound quality is consistently muddy, hushed, and thin. A cameo by the Toots Camarata Orchestra may be of interest as a rarity, and some alternate takes may be tempting for completists.
