Vivo Al Reves is the first international release from Spanish singer/songwriter Carlos de France. Stylistically similar to the "rock en español" acts from Latin America but with a more mature singer/songwriter vibe, de France is roughly equivalent to an American act on the level of Michael Penn or Aimee Mann. (Bizarrely, he looks very much like the young Serge Gainsbourg!) The songs are catchy pop/rock tunes with indigenous Spanish pop touches (flamenco guitar fills, Latin percussion, trumpets, etc.), but there's a well-worn, burnished quality to de France's vocals that adds a touch of gravitas to the proceedings. Lushly produced but not overly slick, Vivo Al Reves is melodic, danceable Latin pop for those who wouldn't be caught dead listening to Ricky Martin.
