Frank Gratkowski (mostly on alto although also playing various clarinets now and then) and pianist Misha Mengelberg engage in six free improvisations during this CD. Gratkowski displays a beautiful tone on alto and both players have adventurous open styles, occasionally witty ideas and the ability to guess where each other is heading. Although there are a few awkward moments early on when Gratkowski and Mengelberg are playing in two keys at once, the music overall features impressive communication and interplay between the masterful musicians. Due to its color, occasional use of improvised melodies and variety, this music is often more accessible than expected while never compromising on its emphasis on spontaneity. Recommended.
