On Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands 1943-45: Wartime Broadcasts, Florida's Soundcraft Records assembled a two-disc set of jazz, swing, and big band performances from the Mutual Broadcasting System's Spotlight Band radio series, which ran from 1941-1946. The program quickly became radio's most popular big band program. Disc one begins with Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra performing six tracks from September 1943. With Buddy Rich on drums and vocals by Skip Nelson and Betty Brewer, songs like "In the Blue of Evening" and "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" are timeless classics. Charlie Barnet & Orchestra are next, from a performance in Massachusetts in 1945. Fran Warren appears on vocals on "Just a Little Fond Affection" and Artie Shaw & His Orchestra, featuring Roy Eldrige on trumpet, are featured next, including "Lucky Number," written by Ray Conniff. Les Brown & His Band of Renown are featured with their 1944 performance, including "It Could Happen to You" with Doris Day on vocals. Tenor saxophonist Ted Nash and trumpeter Randy Brooks also appear. The first disc ends with bonus tracks by Benny Goodman's six-piece band in a spirited December 5, 1941, performance in New York City. Disc two begins with eight tracks by Louis Prima & His Orchestra, including "Don't Ever Change" with vocals by Lily Ann Carol. Harry James & His Orchestra are next, with James leading the way on trumpet. Kitty Kallen appears on vocals on "I'm Beginning to See the Light." Jimmie Lunceford & His Orchestra round out the disc with seven tracks, including "Jeep Rhythm," "What to Do," and "For Dancers Only." Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands 1943-45: Wartime Broadcasts documents a period of U.S. history when music was cherished and patriotism was abundant.
