Reaching the Top Five, this is as high as they've climbed so far. The awesome "Taller Than God" and the expressionist jazz of "Porcelain Hands" both excel, demonstrating McDonald's brilliance as a singer/songwriter. So too is the early-morning jazz of "Gypsies" -- "I'm leaving the city, the streets are still wet" -- and for late night, "Spoiler" makes good. The problem? While Casserly and company can make world-class music of this caliber, too much of the same can wash it all away.
