Originally released in France in 1989 but not available in America until a decade later, Sky Cries Mary's Until the Grinders Cease is an intriguing debut effort. At the time it was recorded, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow were members of the group. Since those two musicians later formed the Posies, it would seem that Until would have a stronger pop edge than the group's later albums, but that's not the case. As a matter of fact, this record has more to do with how waves of noise and sound function as pure psychedelia -- something that SCM explored on later releases, but not to this extent. In other words, it does sound like a debut album, and as such, it's spotty, but fans of the group who've never been able to track it down will find their origins really interesting. And fans of the Posies may be surprised, too.
