AllMusic Review by

Lu Watters is best-known for the two-trumpet version of his Yerba Buena Jazz Band that he led during 1941-42 and 1946-47. However his group of the late-1940's (which found the leader featured as the only trumpeter) was also excellent if underrated. On this Lp (one of seven Watters albums put out by the collector's label Homespun), the band also features clarientist Bob Helm, trombonist Don Noakes (a good ensemble player), pianist Wally Rose and banjoist-vocalist Clancy Hayes; trombonist Turk Murphy makes a guest appearance on "Yellow Dog Blues." Among the many fine dixielandish performances are good versions of "Dusky Stevedore," "Sweethearts On Parade," "Clarinet Marmalade" and a surprisingly effective rendition of "Five Foot Two."
