This obscure effort is definitely a surprise. The two sopranos Kenny Davern (known for playing in trad settings) and Steve Lacy (the leading avant-gardist) meet up in a quartet also including electric bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Paul Motian. Although Lacy had originally started out in Dixieland, the two horns here exclusively play adventurous free jazz pieces. Davern not only holds his own in the unfamiliar setting but contributed two of the eight group originals. Although Davern's usual fans may not care for this free music, Lacy's followers will find the unique effort to be of strong interest. Oddly enough, this would be one of Davern's last recordings on soprano before deciding to stick exclusively to the clarinet.
