First released in 1995 as a limited-edition accompaniment CD to Peter Blegvad's book Headcheese, Unearthed was reissued commercially by Voiceprint in 2000 in a remastered version with new artwork. An unusual item in Blegvad's discography, Unearthed is a collection of stories (included in the booklet) narrated by the Slapp Happy member with musical flooring by longtime collaborator/sideman John Greaves (ex-Henry Cow). An interesting addition to Blegvad's singer/songwriter albums (like Just Woke Up and Hangman's Hill), this CD is the occasion to discover Blegvad's surrealist storytelling talents. Greaves' music and atmospheric settings adapt to the texts, moving from neutral instrumental settings to circus music and audio art, providing pleasant aural packaging. Unearthed includes "The Only Song," which would later be issued in a more powerful (longer and more cynical) form on Hangman's Hill.
