A good DJ always has one more record, a hidden weapon that'll take the dancer higher than the last one, faster than the last one, harder than the last one. After two-and-a-half-hours with this double-mix set from Portugal's main contribution to the global dance circuit, DJ Vibe, one wonders if there could actually be anything left in the crate. Like many mixes of the tribal-progressive vein, this set starts off moody, crawling through half-a-dozen cuts before really hitting its stride. This technique might work in the club, where the DJ doesn't want to wear out his audience too quickly. This is, of course, not rational when home/car listening is the point, but we have to forgive DJs this habit. And six tracks is a small price to pay when holding out for another 20 beat heavy cuts from That Kid Chris, Little Green Men and Phil Kieran, who's "I Love You" grinds the line between tribal house and looped techno into a fine powder. Mr. G crosses that line unabashedly, but Vibe reins it in just enough with Wink's remix of Harry "Choo Choo" Romero's "I Go Back," featuring vocals by Robert Owens. Truly a mighty dance triumvirate rent if there ever was one and a crew worthy of this epic mix.
