Guitarist Rob Levit definitely covers a lot of ground on his trio set. Teamed with bassist Amy Shook and drummer Frank Russo, Levit plays a calypso with rhythm changes ("Singularity"), quite a few introspective ballads (including Sting's pop-country "Fields of Gold" and the heartfelt "Safe Returns"), a rockish freakout on "M-Dive," the quiet waltz "Ballad No. 3," and a passionate version of "Footprints." Occasionally Levit changes his sound altogether (particularly on the more intense pieces), but in general this is a laid-back and thoughtful outing that grows in interest with each listen. The close interplay of the three musicians is particularly impressive, with Shook and Russo following Levit's every musical move.
