Seven combustible songs originally released on Stax Records. David Porter, better known for writing hit after hit with Isaac Hayes, is featured on his best recording "I'm Afraid the Masquerade Is Over," an underground classic from the theatrical Victim of a Joke album. The Bar Kays break out the Memphis funk on "Song & Dance" and Black Moses shows a deep introspective side on "Ike's Mood." Judy Clay & William Bell's "Private Number" and the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself" gives this compilation sales power as both shook the charts up a bit. The Emotions do "It's Not Fair" and Linda Lydell works it on "What a Man," a tune redone to gold status by Salt N Pepa years after the original bombed.
