One long piece of nearly 60 minutes -- but what a piece it is. With just Frode Gjerstad on alto saxophone, William Parker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums, there is never a moment wasted. The Norwegian Gjerstad continues to show why he has attracted the attention of so many giants of the free jazz scene. His searing, sometimes haunting tone, his impeccable tunefulness, and his exquisite rhythmic sense put him squarely in the tradition of Ornette. He is such a powerful performer that he is heard best when he is the only horn, as is the case here. Drake is featured in some incendiary hardcore drum solos, further establishing himself as a drummer of choice among the elite. Parker bows and plucks with his usual intensity. Together, the group's sound hits the mark for one of the finest demonstrations of free jazz improvisation.
