AllMusic Review by

This 25-cut anthology spotlights traditional Bulgarian village singing. Unlike the recent releases by The Bulgarian Women's Chorus, these numbers were recorded in traditional villages and featured vocalists who weren't necessarily professional performers. While their mastery of the idiom's scales, structure and sensibility is intriguing, it's even more interesting to note the use of call-and-response patterns, droning, note sliding, octave jumping and other vocal maneuvers heard in many other cultures. Unless you're turned off hearing music performed without benefit of English translation, you can't help but be impressed by the caliber and depth of these performances.
