This album was pianist Junior Mance's first as a leader since 1967 to include a horn. Mance and tenor saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman make for a logical combination, since their soulful styles often straddle the boundary between jazz and R&B. This hard-to-find LP also features bassist Martin Rivera and drummer Walt Bolden offering fine support behind the lead voices. The repertoire -- three veteran standards plus "Funky Carnival" (which features Newman's flute), Hank Crawford's "Truckin'" and Mance's "Mean Old Amtrak" -- is basic and serves as viable vehicles for the solos of Mance and Newman. Worth searching for.
