AllMusic Review by Stephen Cook

While two discs (not three) would have accommodated all the tracks here, Trojan Box Set: Mod Reggae still packs a wealth of prime ska, rocksteady, rudeboy, and early reggae sides. Over the course of 50 cuts, the mix takes in seminal instrumentals (Baba Brooks' "Gun Fever"), vintage DJ work (King Stitt's "The Ugly One [Lee Van Cleef]"), and, of course, plenty of vocal numbers (the Gladiators' "Sweet Soul Music"). Don't expect too many marquee moments, though, as the collection errs on the more obscure, yet spot-on end of the '60s' Jamaican music, with a fairly even mix of vocals and instrumentals scattered evenly throughout. Not meant for newcomers, this edition of the Trojan box series is perfect for fans looking to dig deeper into the seemingly bottomless store of vintage reggae music.
