In 1992, over the course of 47 shows packed into a month of dates, Dizzy Gillespie held forth at the Blue Note in New York City. With a core rhythm section that included Junior Mance on piano, some 40 musicians whom Diz had influenced were brought onstage to mix it up with the master. These shows were ultimately distilled into three albums, which are packaged together in this box set as "the final recordings." Over the course of the three albums he's joined by Doc Cheatham, Wynton Marsalis, Red Rodney, Wallace Roney, Claudio Roditi, Jon Faddis, Benny Golson, Bobby McFerrin, David Sanchez, Clifford Jordan, and Jackie McLean. As all-star salutes usually go, the music is pretty good, and Diz plays the old master to the hilt, playing good-naturedly around his many disciples. Not the place to start your Diz collection, but a darn good place to end up.
