Trumpeter Jan Allan, pianist Bengt Hallberg, and bassist George Riedel form Trio con Tromba, a superior cool jazz combo. Whether playing standards such as "Django," "I Fall in Love Too Easily," or "Poor Butterfly," or newer originals, they bring back the sound and flavor of 1950s West Coast jazz on their self-titled reissue CD from 1984. Allan's mellow tone and fluent ideas perfectly fit this group, and Hallberg's Bud Powell-oriented style is always a joy to hear. In general, all Allan albums (and there have been at least eight for Dragon) are well worth picking up for his brand of melodic and swinging yet unpredictable jazz is both accessible and quite appealing.
