AllMusic Review by

Released in conjunction with the BBC television series of the same name, Trevor Nelson's Soul Nation cuts a far wider swath than the average compilation, with a reach that extends from the classic soul of the 1960s to funk to later mutations like New Jack Swing. Charting the rise of the UK soul scene across two discs and 35 tracks, veteran DJ Nelson focuses more on musical landmarks than commercial favorites; tracking a trajectory that moves from Archie Bell & the Drells to Sister Sledge to Soul II Soul. He even makes room for the hitmaking production team Stock, Aitken & Waterman's "("Roadblock""). The result is that rare compilation that doesn't merely speak to the converted, but instead offers a panoramic history that encourages listeners to reconsider their own tastes and biases.
