Trav'lin Light Review

by Scott Yanow

Most of this two-LP set is an expanded version of a 1963 album co-led by tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster and the young pianist Joe Zawinul; at the time Zawinul was a regular member of Cannonball Adderley's band. The eight selections are joined by three alternate takes and four of the songs find cornetist Thad Jones making the quartet a quintet. In addition this two-fer has most of a 1957 session that teamed Webster with the personable trombonist Bill Harris. Throughout the set, the music is essentially mainstream swing with Webster heard in top form.
