Continuing his unique exploration of American folk music, Dick Conette leads his large ensemble in mixing traditional songs like "Louis Collins" and "Duke of Earl" with original tunes that have the same earthy sensibility. Ultimately what comes through is a broad musical idea of America. The experience of Last Forever is akin to the work of Aaron Copeland: there is a sweeping sense of the fabled "America" known from old movies and Civil War daguerreotypes. It's ephemeral, but lovely nonetheless.
