In its shifting blend of African and Arabic elements, the fine and varied music here, for voices, percussion and various stringed instruments, reflects the fact that the Comoros belong to the same Afro-Yemeni culture as the Swahili (without Swahili music's Egyptian influence). But the splendid track for ndzedze, a cousin of the valiha, documents their location between Mozambique and Madagascar.
