This is one of the weaker recorded efforts of legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller. Co-leading a group with tenor saxophonist Paul Jeffrey, Fuller's muffled tone diminishes his already nasal sound to the point where it detracts from the listening pleasure. Journeyman Jeffrey is in fine form for this live set of mostly standards, but the overall feel is one of simply going through the motions. Trumpeter Charles Vaudano solos in a strong boppish vein on the couple of numbers in which he plays, and the alternate rhythm sections are more than adequate. The highlight of this short (44:33) disc is Jeffrey's feature on Monk's "'Round Midnight." Otherwise, this has the feel of an average blowing session, with Fuller not quite in peak form. There are better albums available highlighting this trombone master's outstanding contributions.
