Eddie Henderson, who usually has his own sound on trumpet, during much of this set plays very much in the mid-to-late-'60s Miles Davis style. The fact that he performs three Wayne Shorter songs and Joe Zawinul's "Directions" is probably part of the reason, and Miles was an early influence on his playing. Dave Kikoski plays both piano and electric piano, sounding quite comfortable whether the idiom is post-bop or early fusion. Bassist Ed Howard and drummer Victor Lewis give stimulating support and Henderson, despite not sounding as distinctive as usual, is in excellent form. The trumpeter is best on the ballad "Tender You" and "The Summer Knows" although he takes excellent solos on all eight numbers. Not quite essential, this CD will be enjoyed by fans of 1960s Miles Davis.
