When the history of the funk revival is written, Pure Records deserves at least its own chapter. The label was among the first (if not the very first) to compile and reissue long-last classics, rare bits, and dusty grooves for digital consumption, not only resurrecting an entire era of music but inspiring labels like BBE and Soul Patrol in the process. Tighten Up Tighter: A Choice Collection of Funk 45s is a textbook example of the Pure aesthetic, assembling 14 deep funk rarities so densely packed with rattling basslines, wah-wah guitars, scorching horns, and swaggering beats that the whole package verges on self-parody. And if any of these cuts seem familiar, you may be spending too much time scouring the bins: highlights include Piranha Sounds' "La Turbie Piranhienne," the Explorers' "Countdown to Soul," Hindai Butts' "In the Pocket," and Michael Liggins' "Loaded to the Gills."
