This interesting CD collection has 25 selections recorded for the Victor label during a 19-month period. James P. Johnson's group (with Fats Waller on second piano and cornetist King Oliver) performs two numbers; there is the lone four-song date by Cecil Scott's Bright Boys ("Lawd Lawd" and the eccentric "In a Corner" are classics), along with the only six titles ever made by Bubber Miley's Mileage Makers, seven numbers by groups led by trumpeter Dave Nelson, and three songs apiece from Wooding's Grand Central Red Caps and Eubie Blake. Most of the music falls in the realm of hot dance music, but the jazz content is high, and the Miley and Wooding sides in particular were formerly rare. This English import is easily recommended to 1920s collectors.
