AllMusic Review by

Valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer was one of the key arranger-composers for the Mel Lewis Orchestra when he recorded this LP for the now-defunct Finesse label. Brookmeyer used drummer Lewis plus the young trumpeter Tom Harrell and several of Lewis' top sidemen (soprano saxophonist Dick Oatts, pianist Jim McNeely and bassist Marc Johnson) for a set comprised of seven of his complex originals. The high musicianship keeps up with the material and the result is consistently stimulating and thoughtful music.
