Sir Roland Hanna is known for making great music during any recording session, and this live recording made at Jazzhus Sluketter in Denmark is no exception. Accompanied by Jesper Thilo, one of Europe's greatest tenor saxophonists, along with bassist Mads Vinding and drummer Aage Tanggaard, Hanna opens with a driving interpretation of the old warhorse "Stella By Starlight," which showcases each of the four players to good effect. Hanna's lush ballad "This Time It's Real" is also a real gem, spotlighting Thilo's rich tone. "Segue in C," from Count Basie's band book, has the quartet catching just the right groove. But the next track features the quartet playing a strangely unlisted but touching rendition of the bittersweet ballad "Old Folks." Hanna's closing number, "Now and Then Blues," would get the feet tapping and heads bopping of any nightclub audience. Highly recommended.
