After the release of the spare independent album Sing or Die, many looked at Courage of Lassie as a band that just might save new folk. This Side of Heaven is a bit more upbeat and involved, with slicker production and big guest stars, which detracts a bit from one of the band's strengths: leader Ron Nelson's fragile "maybe he shouldn't have been a singer, but I'm glad he is" voice. The best tracks here make you feel like you're sitting in a sidewalk café in Europe, though there's really not enough variety of material to sustain an entire album.
