This off-the-beaten-path jazz roundup delivers a fine array of treats over the course of 20 tracks. Some of the cuts are not the classic originals, but the quality still is high throughout. Taking in the masters of swing, bop, and hard bop, the mix features Earl Hines ("Rosetta"), the Art Farmer & Benny Golson Jazztet ("Blues March"), Wes Montgomery ("Here's That Rainy Day"), and Sonny Rollins ("Oleo"). And while vocal fans can enjoy a few cuts compliments of Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae, lovers of those '80s-era young Turks are given a taste of Wynton Marsalis in the pink with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. Not the first-disc option for neophytes, This Is Jazz still delivers a solid helping of jazz perfect for a Sunday afternoon by the stereo.
