What do Al Jolson, Gertrude Lawrence, Guy Lombardo, Mae West and Jack Lemmon have in common? Very little on the surface, except that they each have one recording included on this Art Deco-era sampler. While the liner notes skip the music and instead discuss the origin of Art Deco, the 20 selections (which are programmed in chronological order) start off with Bert Williams in 1913, feature a variety of showbiz singers, leave space for the Boswell Sisters, the Mills Brothers and Ethel Merman and advance finally to Alberta Hunter in 1982.
