This was a gap filler when it first came out. Thelonious Monk is heard on four selections from a 1955 quartet date with altoist Gigi Gryce, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Art Blakey. Check out Monk's songtitles: "Brake's Sake," "Shuffle Boil" and "Gallop's Gallop." Herbie Nichols, who only recorded three other albums of material as a leader, is heard on a comparatively light session with guitarist Danny Barker, bassist Chocolate Williams and drummer Shadow Wilson in 1952; Williams sings two of the blues. Although these dates are not essential, Monk and Nichols collectors will find this LP quite valuable.
