Time Life Music's Very Best of Singers and Songwriters collection assembles some of the best-known radio hits of the 1970s onto one disc. While there isn't much separating this particular retrospective from the glut of similar releases on the market, Time Life is powerful enough to have obtained the rights to some truly memorable material, without much filler. The compilation features original recordings of singer/songwriter classics like Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown," and Harry Chapin's "Cats in the Cradle." Time Life Music's editors have also included detailed liner notes and numerous artist photographs. Of course, there are a few missteps. While it was a Top Ten hit in 1973, Ann Murray's cover of Loggins & Messina's "Danny's Song" doesn't stand up next to Elton John's "Daniel," and Dan Fogelberg's "Longer" has been maligned by 20-plus years of Muzak. Overall however, Very Best of Singers and Songwriters is exactly that -- a pleasant, entertaining look back at one of the greatest musical trends of the 1970s.
