AllMusic Review by

Johnny Cash was never a garden-variety country singer, plowing a path through what later came to be known as Americana with his seemingly effortless mix of folk, country, rockabilly, pop, and gospel, all of which came out sounding exactly like Johnny Cash. Cash's first studio releases came from Sam Phillips' legendary Sun Records, and this set collects several of those early sides featuring a nascent Cash finding his musical footing. When Phillips hedged at Cash's wish to record a straight gospel album in 1958, the singer left Sun for Columbia Records.
