The budget-priced British compilation The Velvet Voice takes advantage of the 50-year copyright limit on recordings in Europe to present murky copies of 23 recordings by the King Cole Trio originally made for Capitol Records between 1941 and 1947. A number of early hits, notably "Straighten Up and Fly Right," are included, along with Cole favorites like "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)." Stateside Capitol CD reissues of this material are in much better fidelity and present annotations putting the recordings in historical context. But this is an acceptable inexpensive collection for the casual fan.
