Although supposedly filled with songs that inspired U2’s music, this compilation makes a boatload of questionable claims, bypassing some of the more obvious influences (the Police, Brian Eno, Joy Division) and drawing weak links to blues icons and 1950s rock & roll icons. Yes, it’s a little-known fact that U2 once covered Peter Frampton’s “Show Me the Way” during a high school talent show, back when the guys were teenagers performing under the name Feedback. But to claim that Frampton had a lasting influence on U2’s sound is seriously stretching it.
