AllMusic Review by

In 1983 Polygram Classics came out with ten LPs featuring various concerts by Jazz at the Philharmonic, producer Norman Granz's all-star groups. This album is one of the more exciting sets since it features trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers on a "Jam Session Blues," taking their turns on a five-song ballad medley and most notably participating in "The Trumpet Battle." In addition, altoist Benny Carter (who seems inspired by the jam-session setting) and the tenors of Flip Phillips and Lester Young (along with the Oscar Peterson Trio and drummer Buddy Rich) are not to be overlooked. This classic and memorable music has yet to be reissued on CD.
