AllMusic Review by

Johnny Cash was perhaps the most singular, beloved, and iconic artist that country music ever produced, and his recorded legacy is just that, a body of work that made him a legend and an American treasure. His professional career ran from 1954 to 2003, during which time he recorded nearly 100 albums and released over 150 singles, and became universally imprinted as "The Man in Black." This three-disc, 75-track set collects his earliest hits recorded for Sam Phillips' Sun Records in the late '50s, several deeper catalog tracks, including some gospel, from the same period, as well as several of Cash's early Columbia recordings done after he left Sun in 1958.
