Timed to cash in on the success of Baz Luhrmann's film, K-Tel's Stars of the Moulin Rouge certainly looks the part, with graphics evocative of the ornate poster art of the belle époque. It does a fair job of conjuring that era musically, as well, with tracks from Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker, Maurice Chevalier, and Charles Trenet. The collection opens with an obligatorily bombastic version of the can-can, and even its filler songs suggest prewar France. This is by no means the best compilation of music from the time period; however, it might be a nice, economic place to start for anyone intrigued by Luhrmann's decade-hopping film.
