The Speed of Cattle collects B-sides and rarities from this incredible North Carolina band. Some of the material isn't very vital except for serious fans of the band; the first half of the album collects early releases, demos, and singles released with local zines, most of which are fairly rough and not as inventive as the band's major releases. Later in the collection, however, are more recent tracks, as the band developed its melodic, angular feel -- the five songs taken from John Peel sessions are cleaner and sharper than the earlier tracks, and the other assorted rarities are just as excellent. Some amusing liner notes make the collection even more of a treat for Loaf fans.
