This Bear Family single-disc collection provides a fun glimpse into the Tiki exotica music synonymous with the late '50s and early '60s. Producer, author, and expert on all things Tiki, Sven Kirsten, chose 18 cuts that haven't shown up ad nauseum on similar compilations and should sustain the curiosity of collectors and the enjoyment of casual listeners. Alongside pioneers of the genre like Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter, and Martin Denny are lesser-heard tracks from Marais & Miranda, Paul Page, and the Mary Kaye Trio. The disc also explores a few highlights from Tiki television and film of the era by Buddy Morrow, Andy Williams, and Don Ho. Like most Bear Family releases, The Sound of Tiki is lovingly packed with colorful photos, a 52-page booklet, and insightful text.
