During the late '90s, Cologne became Detroit's new companion for the production of intelligent, minimalist techno. Just about every name on the scene appeared on this two-disc compilation, from Mike Ink, Mouse on Mars, Air Liquide, F.X. Randomiz, Rob Acid, Schlammpeitziger, Third Electric, Thomas Brinkmann, Roland Casper and Kandis. Surprisingly, many of the best tracks are by lesser-known names, like the Green Man, Karma, DJ Chestnut and Klystron. The Sound of Cologne, Vol. 1 is almost as essential to a knowledge of techno as Detroit's Depth Charge series.
