The Soul-Stirring Gospel Sounds of the Pilgrim Travelers Review

by Scott Yanow

Recorded during the same period of time as his breakthrough jazz record Stormy Monday, this set of gospel music reunited Lou Rawls with the group that he performed with regularly during 1957-1959, the Pilgrim Travelers. Rawls sounds quite comfortable singing some of gospel's greatest hits even if a few of the arrangements would be more suitable for a country rather than soul singer. The first 11 selections formed the original LP. The next three numbers use a similar group with a horn section but are secular in nature even if they contain the same passion as Rawls' religious work. "Count on Me" was previously unreleased and the other two songs were formerly out as a single. Finally "'Til the Last Leaf Shall Fall" is from the gospel dates but also has never been out before. Listeners who enjoy gospel music will find this to be a worthwhile set of heartfelt music.
