AllMusic Review by

This lovingly compiled four-disc box set presents many of the finest recordings by clarinet and soprano-saxophone innovator Sidney Bechet. One of Louis Armstrong's only true peers, the New Orleans-born Bechet was a bold improviser who influenced scores of jazz artists, and his talent is evident on every track here, including a rollicking take on Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag," the jaunty "Stompy Jones," and a sweltering rendition of "Summertime." For those who find this comprehensive four-disc/93-track compilation too daunting, the Bechet installment of the KEN BURNS JAZZ series is ideal.
