AllMusic Review by

This disc, volume two of Deutsche Grammophon's Segovia collection, presents an interesting variety of music mostly from the Hispanic tradition, with the exception of the Italian-born Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and it was originally recorded in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. As the liner notes explain, Torroba, inspired by Segovia's enthusiasm for the guitar, started composing for him in the 1920s. Representative of Torroba's vast and significant contribution to guitar literature are the exquisite Castles of Spain, charming, engaging vignettes that Segovia brings to life with a unique blend of nonchalance and discernment. In Torroba's Piezas características, Segovia masterfully reveals and expresses the whimsical, energetic spirit of these splendid miniatures. The pensive, meditative, intimate world of Mompou is a unique, enigmatic, deeply personal musical universe that Segovia explores and interprets with the authority of a performer who finds no musical style, or mode, too distant or difficult to understand. Segovia is equally convincing in Castelnuovo-Tedesco's brilliantly extroverted (yet not lacking in mystery) Sonata "Omaggio a Boccherini," which he plays with manic energy on the surface and with extraordinary technical mastery, illuminating the more lyrical moments with the iridescent splendor of his instrument's many voices: exuberant, energetic, passionate, and enigmatic. The energy of Ponce's Allegro may seem subdued compared to Castelnuovo-Tedesco's music, but the Mexican composer's music, mostly known for a perceived exoticism, provides Segovia with the opportunity to explore a fascinating musical language that masterfully incorporates several idioms. All said, this disc presents Segovia as an artist constantly in quest of new technical and musical challenges, a guitarist who understood that the vast spirit of his instrument could never be limited by definitions.
