Most people have come to hear Luciano Pavarottis singing in gargantuan stadiums and supported by a vast orchestra and elaborate sound system. Driven by the popular demand that these concerts have aroused, his recording output has, more and more, reflected these performing conditions. Consequently, one may forget that Pavarotti can be a suave, gentle and nuanced singer. This recording of his 1989 Barcelona recital, unmiked and accompanied by the piano alone, serves as a strong reminder of Pavarottis less stentorian vocal gifts and pleads the case for his returning to the smaller arena and its more intimate musical offerings. His clean reading of the unadorned Bellini song, "Dolente imagine di fille mia," in which he neither forces his voice nor lapses into typical operatic tenor posturing, will reveal a musical side of Pavarotti unknown to those schooled in the Pavarotti of the mammoth outdoor concert.
