Bud Freeman's final record (originally a nine-song LP program that in its CD version expanded to 12 tunes) found the 77-year old tenor great still in good form. Having recently returned to Chicago after an extended stay in England, Freeman is joined by a Chicago-based rhythm section (pianist Stuart Katz, guitarist Bob Roberts, bassist John Bany and drummer Barrett Deems) for two standards and five of his inventive and often witty originals. In addition, Freeman duets with Roberts on "I Cover the Waterfront" and with Katz on a lyrical "My Romance." Although not quite essential compared to his earlier work (and this set will be difficult to find), Bud Freeman's last recording was up to his usual standards and certainly has its enjoyable moments.
