AllMusic Review by

One of the most diverse collections ever ranges from Blind Willie McTell to Kool Moe Dee. Disc one is blues and gospel of the '20s to the '40s (Alberta Hunter, Sleepy John Estes, Roosevelt Sykes, etc.). Disc two covers jazz, starting and ending with two versions of "Black and Tan Fantasy": Duke's earliest version, and a recent Marcus Roberts interpretation. Part three covers pop, soul, and rap, outlining RCA's involvement with the more commercial sides of black music. There's never been another collection like it.
