From one of the deepest of jazz catalogs comes this collection of vintage hard bop. Roughly covering the latter half of the '50s and the early '60s, The Prestige Sampler takes in a bevy of instrumental giants and the classic vocalese singers King Pleasure ("Parker's Mood") and Annie Ross ("Twisted"). On the "blowing" end, there are cornerstone performances by Miles Davis ("Airegin"), Monk ("Work"), Eric Dolphy ("On Green Dolphin Street"), and Sonny Rollins ("St. Thomas"). And, still, there are equally enjoyable sides from the likes of Coltrane, Red Garland, the MJQ, Gene Ammons, and Coleman Hawkins. As good a place as any to start your jazz collection.
