The subtitle of this compilation is "20 of Bluegrass Music's Greatest Hits," and it does not tell a lie. The producers might also have added that the performers were bluegrass music's greatest performers as well. Featured on the CD are musicians like Bill Monroe, Grandpa Jones, the Osborne Brothers, and Merle Travis, who made this music the exciting and heartfelt art form that people are constantly being bowled over by. A few of the classics collected here are "Great Speckled Bird" by Jim & Jesse, "Footprints in the Snow" by the Smith Brothers Bluegrass Orchestra, and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" by Lester Flatt. If you were one of the multitudes who bought the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack and are looking for more authentic bluegrass, The Pioneers of Bluegrass is fine place to start.
